Body

This article analyzes the survey which A. A. Bobrinsky conducted in the 1960s about pottery-making in the Perm Region. The survey is composed of 139 letters, mostly written by village council chairmen, less often by potters or their relatives. It offers a variety of material reflecting different aspects of pottery production in the region, and reveals the existence of various pottery traditions in the Perm region, including the preservation of archaic forms. The spread of different traditions testifies to the coexistence of various time strata in the history of Permian pottery. Currently, the materials of Bobrinsky’s personal archive remain the most comprehensive source of information on the development of pottery production in the region in the late nineteenth and mid–twentieth centuries.
