Body

Observation of rhymes, otherwise speeches of participants of a wedding ceremony (groomsmen, maidens, matchmakers, guests and other) allows to assume this genre during its development to assimilate poetic inventory, motives, structural and stylistic features of other folklore genres and literary works. Comparison of wedding speeches with many genres (not only those belonging to wedding ceremony) demonstrates inclusion of fragments of folklore and literary texts into the speeches of wedding participants, identical motives preserving their semantics and, in some cases, entire verbal manifestation, using same poetic inventory — typical elements of language and style. Dealing with broad contextual material the author considers speeches addressed to “wedding tree”, which were articulated by girls at bride’s house during carrying out and redemption of “maiden’s beauty”. For the wedding tree, symbolizing the «maiden’s beauty», there was used a fir-tree (a spruce) or alternatively a birch, decorated by flowers, tinsel, sweeties, candles, fabric scraps, beads, sometimes with a puppet on the top of tree.

This kind of wedding speeches has a limited geographical distribution, the main body of texts is recorded in the Kostroma province in 19th — early 21th century; a few sporadic records are noted in several regions of Nizhniy Novgorod province and in Siberia. The textual analysis of this group of texts shows active use of stylistic repertoire of groomsman’s rhymes, wedding laments and ceremonial lyrics. Supervision of the poetics of girl’s speeches addressed “to fir-tree” allows to elicit mechanisms of assimilation and adaptation of certain structural and stylistic inventory by this genre and to assume reasons of cross-genre interaction.
