The article examines the organization and practice of conducting field ethnographic research in Southern Europe (Italy and Portugal) in comparison with the models of long-term stationary participant observation that became the standard in scholarship in the twentieth century. As an example, the studies — recognized as exemplary by the most influential ethnologists of the second half of the twentieth century in the respective countries (E. De Martino and J. Dias) — are examined. Their approach to field research is considered with respect to the socio-political context of their respective countries and is compared to similar developments in Russia.
