This article is an essay on the life and work of the prominent Rostov folklorist T. I. Tumilevich (1924–2002). Tamara Ivanovna dedicated her entire life to the study and teaching of folklore. Since the 1950s, she participated in field studies of folk poetry and prose and later organized folklore expeditions and consulted folklore ensembles. For more than 40 years, she taught various disciplines related to folklore at the Rostov State University. The geography of the scholar’s field research covered the Rostov Region and the places of migration of the Nekrasov Cossacks and Lipovans from Turkey and Romania to the Krasnodar and Stavropol Krai territories. In the 1980s Tumilevich published material recorded during the expeditions in three folklore anthologies, which still retain their scholarly value. This article, written using archival and published data, covers the main stages of the scholar’s biography and provides an overview of her scholarship.
