Body

In 2019 and 2020, expeditions from the folklore department of the A. M. Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences made video recordings of the Malanka rite in the village of Klokushna in the Oknice district of Moldova. Part of this rite is a performance that derives from the Russian folk drama “Tsar Maksimilian.” This publication contains the text of the presentation in Moldovan/Romanian and a translation into Russian; thе Russian translation includes stage directions. The text is preceded by a description of the characters’ costumes and masks. The introduction compares the East Slavic and Moldavian versions of “Tsar Maksimilian” and describes how this folklore phenomenon was able to adapt to a foreign national and linguistic environment. The adaptation of “Tsar Maksimilian” in Moldova was connected to the play’s inclusion into the “Malanka” rite, and also to the country’s historical fate. At the same time, the Moldovan version of the drama retains a tangible connection with the play that came here from the metropolis — at the level of plot, composition, the structure of mis-enscène, and the use of speech formulas.
