Body

The subject of this article are oral stories of Harbin residents (Russians, mixedblood, and Chinese) about life in Harbin in the first half of the twentieth century. Memorates were collected as a result of field research in 2015–2019 in Blagoveshchensk, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Harbin and Beijing. This collection of materials presents the memories of representatives of different ethnic, social and political groups: descendants of Russian immigrants, Chinese migrants, children of the CER (Chinese Eastern Railway) employees, children of Chinese Party leaders who found themselves in Harbin as a result of revolutionary events and the Civil War, migration to Manchuria from Central China, revolutionary events in China itself and the formation of the PRC. The work gives an interpretation of the concept of “Harbin text” of culture and history, defines the methodology for the study of memorials in the Russian-speaking and Chinese-speaking environment. Memorials about Harbin are studied as a genre of urban folklore.
