This article deals with two Buryat legends — “Narin khuzuun Guldemey” and the chapter about Aksagaldai from the epic “Abay Geser-hubun”— in comparison with the story about the accession of the Xiongnu leader Mode (234–174 BC) told a century later by the Chinese chronicler Sima Qian in his “Historical Notes”. According to the historian N. N. Kradina, this story is originally a work of folklore written down from a Xiongnu storyteller. Comparative analysis of the three narratives reveals their semantic and plot similarity, primarily due to the motif of the struggle for power and succession to the throne. This motif is particularly evident in the “warrior” cycle of “Narin khuzuun Guldemey”, in which the Xiongnu title “shanyu” is preserved as an honorary nickname of the hero of the same name. And in the legend about Aksagaldai, the conflict between the senior combatant and the ruler (Geser) is associated with the motif of betrayal and the desire for power, which also finds figurative consonance with the legend of “Mode”. In general, the main motif of the struggle for power constitutes the theme of the three epic plots considered in this article. Together they point to the oral tradition as a source and repository of historical memory among Central Asian nomads. The fact that the Buryats lived on the periphery of the Great Steppe in the Baikal region contributed to the long-term archaization of epic folklore and the preservation of a unique echo of Xiongnu times
