This work raises the question of pragmatics of folk songs. The paper considers one of the modern folk singing practices — singing alone. Reports of people who practice such singing provide an information source about the practice. Basing on field interviews I have come to conclusion that the relation between song poetics and pragmatics is that psychological state of a singer induces his (her) illocutionary goals. These goals determine the choice of songs. Specific features of the songs’ poetics are involved in the therapeutic effect of singing. Biographical information about singers, understanding of their emotional state at the moment of singing alone, goals and results of the ongoing action can be identified from the context of singing. The study is based on the contemporary field recordings of folk songs that are part of the repertoire of rural people that live in Mezen’ the river’s basin in Arkhangelsk region.
