Body

This article examines the travel notes and memoirs of the Russian ethnographer S. V. Maksimov, In the East. The Trip to Amur (1860–1861) and the nature of his contact with the Manchu and Chinese population. It considers his work through the prism of the ethnographic research of the time and focuses on the perception of Manchus and Chinese in the texts of Russian travelers. By the time of Maksimov’s trip to the Far East, his ethnographic program had already defined the logic and basic techniques of field ethnography (consisting in preliminary historical preparation, expeditionary research, participant observation, survey). This both determined the way he perceived representatives of foreign cultures and shaped the subsequent methodology of domestic ethnography. Maksimov’s cultural-historical and comparative-typological approach to the study of the Manchus and to their interaction with the Russian population of the Far East was particularly productive. The author of this article examines Maksimov’s populist frame of perception as well as the distinctive features of his research, conditioned by the author’s paradoxical type of thinking, subtle linguistic sense, ironic vision of the world, and his particular narrative strategy, all of which left a significant mark on the development of the “artistic ethnography” of the Far East.
