The section of the article on Cossacks in Mongolia was written with the support of a grant The Russian Science Foundation № 23-18-00478.
This article examines the historical formation of the Khamnigan Cossacks of the Trans-Baikal Onon region, who are unique in terms of their ethnic and cultural roots. This ethnic subgroup of Mongolized Evenks came under Cossack rule and enrolled in Cossack regiments; over time they became integrated with them. The article describes how the lifestyle of the TransBaikal Cossacks shaped the socio-ethnic character of the Khamnigan inhabitants of the region. The article notes that the joint service of the Karaul Cossacks and the Khamnigans in guarding the border gave rise to and strengthened not only family ties but also shared spiritual and moral values. After the events of 1917, most of the Onon Cossack-Khamnigans were forced to emigrate to neighboring countries, such as Mongolia and China. It has been established that members of the Khamnigan Cossacks currently living in these countries remember their Cossack origins, which is reflected in their oral traditions and songs. This article is based on archival sources and the authors’ personal observations.
