Body

The dynamics of historical memory are examined in the article through the 28 example of Victory Day celebrations in the post-Soviet space of the Central Asian republics — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The research is based on materials from open-source internet resources and the authors’ personal observations. A shared historical past and cultural heritage have formed a unified cultural and historical space between the Central Asian region and Russia, this is an important factor factor in preserving historical memory. The negative factors that influenced the preservation of collective memory were the desire of independent states to form their national identity based on the denial of the “colonial” past and the policy of the collective West to discredit the Soviet historical heritage.

The falsification and mythologization of historical facts, the rewriting of history textbooks, the falling interest in military history among the population, and the transformation of Victory Day traditions were the result of the memory policy in the republics. The memory of the Great Patriotic War continues to play an important role in the republics state policy, it is an integrating factor in the formation of national identity and patriotic education, despite the peculiarities of the dynamics of the processes of memorization in the region. Common memorial projects related to the celebration of Victory Day, which are organized by state and non-state Central Asian republics memory institutes with the participation of Russia, are a way of socio-cultural integration and strengthening interregional relations in Eurasia.
