Body

The purpose of this article is to consider the grave of a saint as a type of space that acquires special status thanks to hierophany (M. Eliade). The death of a locally venerated saint may thus serve as a “mythical first event” (V. Vinogradov) that entails further veneration of the holy one’s resting place. Such is the case with Vasenka the Blessed, whose veneration has been revived in recent years. The article is based on field recordings made during two religious processions in 2006 to Vasenka the Blessed’s grave, located in the forest between Yazykovo and Tenkovka — villages of the Karsunsky district, Ulyanovsk region. Saint Vasenka lived in the nineteenth century. He was a holy fool, distinguished by his righteous way of life, for which the Lord sent him a miraculous passing: after his death, Vasenka’s body is said to have remained uncorrupted for forty days. St. Gabriel (Igoshkin), who lived in Bazarny Uren in the 1940s, compiled a saint’s life of Vasenka, who was buried at the place of his death, a clearing in the forest. The grave of another saint, Father Vasily, who died in 1950, is located in the nearby Bazarny Uren cemetery. Father Vasily and his grave are also revered, and with a very well-developed ritual practice. The article attempts to assess the influence of Vasenka’s saint’s life and the veneration of Father Vasily on the (re)construction of the cult of Vasenka the Blessed. Furthermore, the author describes two models of veneration. In the first, the object of veneration is primary and the place is secondary (the transfer of relics leads to the creation of a new venerated space). In the second, the place is primary and the object of veneration is secondary (the place continues to be venerated despite the removal of the relics). She describes the case of Vasenka the Blessed as occupying an intermediate position between the two.
