Body

The present article gives an overview of audio materials from the folklore expeditions of 1961–1962 led by Fyodor Vasilievich Plesovsky. These are the earliest records from the Udorsky district, stored in the Folklore Fund of the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Komi Scientific Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The main part of the collection consists of field research along the Mezen River, but some of the records were made on the Vashka River during a joint expedition with T. I. Ornatskaya, a member of the folk art sector of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House). The article examines the genre content of the recordings. The author also considers the repertoire of lyric songs and songs of literary origin in comparison with other traditions of the Komi and bordering Russian districts; the lamentations are considered in light of F. V. Plesovsky’s research. Plesovsky’s collection represents an integral corpus of material which provides an opportunity to study of both the Upper Mezen song tradition and the problem bilingualism in folklore, a significant topic in Russian folkloristics.
