The article was written in accordance with the research plan of the Siberian Branch of the Likhachev Russian Research Institute for Cultural and Natural Heritage
This article examines the headdresses worn by Russian Siberian women, providing a typology and frequency by age group. It reviews changes in design and style over time and discusses how headdresses fit into Russian Siberians’ traditional attire. The emergence of both traditional and urban costume styles at the turn of the nineteenth to twentieth century is also addressed. The article describes the rejection of traditional dress as a response to the challenges of society that arose in areas of mass migration. In the agricultural belt of Siberia, this meant the mixing of Russians from different regions of Russia. Competition among local traditions leads folk culture to adopt universal elements and lose regional distinctions. Costumes become standardized and influenced by fashion and market forces. The article notes that Siberia’s experience is typical; similar changes occur in areas of mass resettlement, as seen in the Lower Volga region.
